If you could design your own vehicle, from the ground up, what would power it?

I don’t even have to give it a second thought. I’ve always thought a Turbine/electric hybrid would be awesome.

For one, you get the power-to-weight advantage of a turbine over the traditional ICE engine, but without the throttle lag that a turboshaft engine would bring.

Since you wouldn’t need massive blocks of batteries to give the car a respectable range, and you wouldn’t need a particularly large turbine to generate enough power to keep the batteries topped up, I think you could end up with a very lightweight vehicle.

Of course you’d end up getting like 10mpg but that’s minor. On the plus side, you can use just about anything that will burn as fuel!

*I am not an expert, and just basing this on my limited knowledge of turboshaft engines from my helicopter enthusiast days.

There’s no proper answer other than the magic dorito.

Kinja'd!!!

Except I’d attach mine to an electric motor, basically using the rotary as a generator, like the gas engine in a Volt or an i3.

Some sort of inline 6 - perhaps a diesel. I’ve always thought that was the most sensible and balanced design. Dress it up as a hybrid, turbocharged, supercharged, show me what you’ve got. Or a Volvo/Mercedes style 5 cylinder, if it’s smooth.

A “Just for me” vehicle? It’s almost been done. I want a Detroit 12v-71 powered pickup.

Like this with a usable bed.

A twin-supercharged LFA V10.

I don’t need to explain why.

LS with full forged components and some kind of electric assisted turbocharger. Also ITBs.

I’ll figure that out later, but for now know this: I won’t need a fucking back up cam.

You said vehicle. I say 2x Williams FJ33 turbofans in a small two-seater flying wing.

See here . Then replace the HayaBROsa engine with a naturally-aspirated version of BMW’s F1 inline-4 .
